Manipur Gears Up for President Droupadi Murmu’s Two-Day Visit

Imphal, December —

Manipur has begun extensive preparations ahead of President Droupadi Murmu’s anticipated two-day visit to the state starting December 11, with officials directing major beautification and security measures along key routes in the capital.

Workers have started repainting road medians along the 7-km stretch from Imphal Airport to the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex, the route expected to be part of the President’s movement. The stretch has also been lined with colourful flags and decorations to welcome the VVIP guest.

A 20-foot welcome banner has already been erected near Keisampat Junction, signaling the beginning of full-scale arrangements.

Although the President’s official itinerary has not yet been formally released, officials confirmed that advance instructions have been issued to tighten security.

“We have not received the official programme yet, but directions have come to put all necessary security protocols in place for a VVIP visit,” an official said.

Meanwhile, a coalition of militant groups has announced a “total shutdown” in protest against the President’s visit, raising concerns about security and transportation during the two days.

According to officials familiar with the preparations, President Murmu is likely to attend a programme in Imphal on December 11. On December 12, she is expected to pay homage to the women freedom fighters at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex, where she will commemorate the two historic women-led uprisings of 1904 and 1939 against British colonial rule—events collectively known as Nupi Lal.

The President is also expected to travel to Senapati district, a Naga-majority region, for another official engagement on the same day, officials added.
