Manipur: Kangpokpi CSOs Announce Complete Ban on Poppy Cultivation from 2026
Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district have resolved to enforce a total ban on poppy cultivation beginning in 2026, marking a significant collective step against illicit drug farming in the region.
The decision was unanimously adopted during a cabinet-level meeting of CSOs held in Kangpokpi on December 5, which brought together a wide spectrum of community stakeholders. Participants included the Sadar Hills Chiefs’ Association, Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, various tribal bodies, student unions, women’s groups, youth organisations, and other civil society representatives.
To ensure effective implementation of the resolution, the CSOs initiated a series of consultations across the district involving village authorities and community leaders. Follow-up meetings were held in Kangpokpi on December 10, at Bongmol village on December 16 with chiefs from Southwest Sadar Hills, Gamgiphai–Taphou and Twilang areas, and at Saikul Community Hall on December 19 with village chiefs from Ukhrul, Bungpi and Saikul regions.
According to the CSOs, village chiefs and local organisations across all consultations unanimously endorsed the decision to completely prohibit poppy cultivation from the New Year 2026.
The CSOs stated that the ban is aimed at safeguarding society from the harmful social, environmental, economic, and moral consequences associated with poppy cultivation. They described the resolution as an expression of the collective will of the people of Kangpokpi district to protect their land and communities.
Warning of strict consequences, the CSOs said any village chief or authority found violating the resolution would face firm action. They further described the declaration as a united stand to preserve social harmony and secure a safer future for coming generations.
