ZUF Warns Kuki Groups Against Land Encroachment in Manipur

The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), S Kamson group—a Naga armed organisation seeking a separate administrative unit for the Zeliangrong tribes comprising the Zeme, Liangmai and Rongmei across Manipur, Nagaland and Assam—has issued a strong warning to Kuki groups in Manipur, citing concerns over alleged land encroachment and unlawful activities.

In a statement released on Thursday by its Ministry of Information and Publicity, the ZUF said the warning followed an armed confrontation involving its military wing, the Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF), and Kuki underground outfits. According to the statement, the gun battle occurred at around 7:40 am at Kharam Vaiphei village in the Sadar Hills area of Kangpokpi district. During the operation, the ZUF claimed that two to three Kuki cadres were believed to have sustained serious injuries, while ZTF personnel reportedly returned safely to their base.

The ZUF stated that the operation was prompted by multiple issues, including the alleged submission of a topographical map in support of demands for a separate administrative arrangement, suspected illegal poppy cultivation along routes commonly referred to as German Road and Tiger Road, and the establishment of what it described as unauthorised camps under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework. The group further alleged that these activities were being carried out within what it considers the traditional and ancestral territory of the Zeliangrong Inpui.

Clarifying its position, the ZUF said it does not oppose the legitimate aspirations of the Kuki people within their recognised native areas. However, it firmly asserted that no Kuki land falls within Zeliangrong Inpui ancestral territory. Reiterating its resolve to safeguard its people, land and property, the organisation warned that any form of encroachment would not be tolerated. It urged those allegedly occupying the areas unlawfully to vacate immediately, cautioning that failure to do so could lead to further escalation.

Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi, also acknowledged that a gunfight had taken place early Thursday morning at Kharam Vaiphei. In its statement, CoTU described the village as a Kuki-Zo settlement located on the outskirts of Kangpokpi district and alleged that the attackers used bombs and firearms, including what it termed sophisticated weapons. CoTU further accused a group identifying itself as the ZUF of carrying out the attack and claimed that the outfit was operating with the backing of valley-based insurgent organisations.

The incident has added to already heightened tensions in the hill areas of Manipur, where disputes over land, poppy cultivation, armed group movements and competing political demands continue to pose serious challenges to peace and stability. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the clash, and the situation remains closely monitored as more details are awaited.
