Villagers in Ukhrul Announce NH-202 Blockade From Feb 4 Over Stalled Road Project
Guwahati: Residents of several villages in Manipur’s Ukhrul district have warned of a three-day blockade on National Highway-202, citing prolonged delays in road widening work and unpaid land compensation.
The proposed blockade, scheduled from February 4 to February 6, will affect the Finch Corner to Choithar Junction stretch, effectively cutting off a vital transport route. Villagers from Hungpung, Shangshak Phunghon, Shangshak Khullen, and Hatha are expected to participate.
The villagers said they approached the district administration on January 28, submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding immediate resolution. Despite the project being initiated in 2018, they claim no meaningful progress has been made on the disputed stretch.
Calling the highway critical to Ukhrul’s connectivity, the residents highlighted its role in emergency medical services, commercial activities, and education. They added that although land acquisition has been completed, affected families are still awaiting compensation.
Work under designated Package-3 and Package-4 remains stalled, residents said, leading to worsening road conditions marked by landslides and damaged surfaces. While work continues on the Yaingangpokpi–Finch Corner section, the Finch Corner–Hungpung package was cancelled due to lack of funds, and no tender has been issued for the Hungpung–Choithar stretch.
The villagers stated that the blockade would continue unless authorities demonstrate tangible progress and provide firm commitments within seven days.
