Manipur Assembly Session Called; Khemchand Government to Prove Majority on Thursday
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has convened the 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly for Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 4:00 PM, during which the newly formed government will face a floor test.
The decision came after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh soon after his swearing-in at Lok Bhavan on February 4, 2026. The Cabinet passed a formal resolution recommending the summoning of the Assembly.
Along with calling the session, the Cabinet approved the Governor’s Address scheduled for Thursday and cleared the proposal for a confidence motion to establish the government’s majority on the House floor. The meeting marked the first Cabinet sitting in over a year and was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, as well as newly inducted Ministers Konthoujam Govindas Singh and Khuraijam Loken Singh.
Earlier in the evening, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh presided over his first Cabinet meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, shortly after assuming office. Following his election as the BJP Legislative Party leader, he had formally staked claim to form the government.
On February 4, Governor Bhalla administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yumnam Khemchand Singh as the 13th Chief Minister of Manipur at Lok Bhavan. Acting on the Chief Minister’s advice, the Governor also swore in two Deputy Chief Ministers—Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho—and two Cabinet Ministers, Konthoujam Govindas Singh and Khuraijam Loken Singh, during the ceremony held at 6 PM in Imphal.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led government has received unconditional support from several parties, including the National People’s Party (6 MLAs), Naga People’s Front (5 MLAs), Janata Dal (United) (1 MLA), along with two Independent legislators, strengthening its position ahead of the floor test.
