Manipur CM Y. Khemchand Begins Peace Outreach in Jiribam, Meets Kuki-Zo and Hmar Leaders

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Tuesday launched a significant peace outreach initiative by visiting Jiribam and interacting with leaders of the Kuki-Zo community, marking a crucial step toward restoring normalcy in the violence-affected region.

During his visit, the Chief Minister held discussions with community leaders and local residents, emphasizing reconciliation and long-term development. Calling Jiribam the “gateway to Manipur,” CM Khemchand assured that the government would focus on transforming the district into a thriving business and trade hub.

Notably, Khemchand is the first Chief Minister to visit Jiribam since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023. He appealed to all communities to move beyond the painful past and work collectively toward peace and stability in the state.

As part of his outreach, the Chief Minister visited Jairalpokpi, a Kuki-Zo and Hmar village that witnessed widespread violence and arson during the 2023 unrest. He also visited the residence of a Hmar woman who lost her life during the clashes, expressing solidarity with the bereaved family.

The visit is being viewed as a key confidence-building measure amid ongoing efforts to rehabilitate displaced families and rebuild trust among communities.
