Manipur: Unknown Disease Kills Hundreds of Poultry in Imphal Valley
An unidentified flu-like disease has reportedly killed hundreds of poultry birds across several areas of Manipur, particularly in Imphal East and Imphal West districts, causing heavy losses to commercial poultry farms and backyard poultry owners.
According to reports, the outbreak is affecting multiple poultry breeds, including kuroiler, broiler, layer chickens, local chickens, and ducks.
Farmers said infected birds are showing symptoms such as:
- Swollen heads
- Nasal discharge
- Weakness and respiratory distress
- Sudden death
Affected areas in Imphal East reportedly include Khurai, Keirao, Thongju, Bamon Kampu, Kongba, Wangkhei, Akampat, and Kongpal. Cases have also been reported from Ningombam, Langol, Iroishemba, Lamshang, Samurou, and Yumnam Huidrom in Imphal West district.
A poultry farmer from Thongju Ningomthong stated that nearly 30 egg-laying hens died suddenly before veterinary assistance could be arranged.
With mounting losses, several farmers are reportedly selling infected or potentially exposed birds at heavily reduced prices to minimise financial damage. Some large birds weighing 3–4 kilograms are allegedly being sold for as low as Rs 200 each.
Poultry owners have urged the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department to immediately collect samples, identify the disease, and take urgent containment measures to prevent further spread.
The outbreak has triggered concern among farmers and local residents, with growing calls for rapid testing, monitoring, and government intervention to protect the poultry sector and prevent wider economic impact.
