Manipur: KIM Shutdown Halts 500 Vehicles in Senapati, Supply Crisis Looms

A major supply disruption is looming in Manipur after more than 500 vehicles, mostly goods-laden trucks travelling towards Imphal from Guwahati and Dimapur, remained stranded for five consecutive days along National Highway-102 in Senapati district.

The blockade stretch lies between Khongnem and T. Khullen areas and follows an indefinite shutdown called on May 13 by Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM).

KIM announced the shutdown in Kuki-Zo inhabited areas following the killing of three church leaders in a deadly ambush and the alleged illegal detention and hostage-taking of several community members.

The prolonged shutdown has severely disrupted normal life across hill districts, with business establishments, transport services, and government offices remaining closed.

Drivers, passengers, and transport workers stranded along the highway are reportedly facing:

  • Shortages of food and drinking water
  • Lack of sanitation facilities
  • Scarcity of essential supplies
  • Increasing hardship due to prolonged uncertainty

Many stranded trucks are carrying perishable commodities such as potatoes, onions, fish, eggs, and other food items, raising fears of spoilage and worsening shortages in the Imphal valley if the situation continues.

Meanwhile, security forces have intensified search operations and area domination exercises in vulnerable areas across the state.

Officials said the movement of 130 vehicles carrying essential supplies along National Highway-37 connecting Imphal with Silchar in Assam has been secured under heavy escort.

Authorities also stated that:

  • Strict security arrangements are in place in vulnerable zones
  • Security convoys are escorting vehicles through sensitive stretches
  • A total of 115 check posts and nakas have been established across hill and valley districts

The continued blockade has raised concerns over a possible supply crisis in Manipur if transportation along NH-102 is not restored soon.
