Manipur: Two Killed, Several Houses Burnt in Fresh Violence in Kamjong District

Kamjong, June 11: Two people were killed and two others sustained injuries after unidentified armed assailants allegedly attacked Kultuh village in Manipur’s Kamjong district during the early hours of Thursday, police officials said.

The attack took place at around 4:30 a.m. when armed miscreants, reportedly carrying sophisticated weapons, entered the village and opened indiscriminate fire on residents. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the state following the recent recovery of six mutilated bodies believed to be those of missing Naga civilians who were abducted last month.

During the assault, several houses were set on fire, causing extensive damage to property. According to police reports, at least seven houses were completely destroyed in the blaze.

The deceased have been identified as Letminlun Haokipop (35), son of Sonsei Haokipop, and Lunminthang Haokipop (23), son of Late Thankhahao Haokipop, both residents of Kultuh village. Community members described the victims as active and respected members of the local population.

Two other villagers, identified as Jangkhomang (28), son of Yamkholun, and Kamminlal (27), son of Late Tilpao, suffered injuries during the attack. They were immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility and are currently receiving treatment.

Police stated that the identity of the attackers remains unknown. Security forces have launched a large-scale search operation in and around the affected area while investigators work to determine those responsible for the violence.

Authorities have registered a suo motu case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including charges related to murder, attempted murder, rioting, arson, and unlawful use of firearms. A case has also been registered under Section 25(1-C) of the Arms Act, 1959.

Officials said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Additional security personnel have been deployed across the district to prevent further deterioration of the law and order situation.

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security environment in Manipur, where sporadic incidents of violence continue to pose challenges despite ongoing operations by security agencies aimed at restoring peace and normalcy.
