Manipur: Massive Landslide Blocks NH-37 in Tamenglong, Hundreds of Vehicles Stranded
Tamenglong, June 25: A massive landslide triggered by continuous rainfall has severely disrupted traffic movement along National Highway-37 (NH-37) in Manipur’s Tamenglong district, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and affecting one of the state’s most important supply routes.
According to officials, the landslide occurred on Wednesday morning between Shanti Khunou and Rengpang near the camp of the 87 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). A large section of the highway was buried under rocks, mud, and debris, bringing traffic to a complete standstill.
The incident has stranded hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the highway, including private vehicles, passenger transport, and trucks carrying essential commodities. A significant number of the affected vehicles were transporting food items, fuel, and other supplies from Silchar to Imphal via Jiribam, while others were travelling towards Assam.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported in connection with the landslide.
Before the road was blocked, security agencies had successfully facilitated the movement of 392 vehicles carrying essential goods along the highway. Officials stated that convoy protection and security surveillance continue to be maintained on vulnerable stretches of NH-37 to ensure the safe passage of vehicles once the road is reopened.
Restoration and clearance operations were launched immediately after the incident. Personnel from Ganpati Construction Company, the agency responsible for maintenance and blacktopping work along the Imphal–Jiribam road section, have been deployed to clear debris and restore connectivity at the earliest.
Heavy rainfall in recent days has increased the risk of landslides and road blockages across several parts of Manipur, particularly along hilly stretches that serve as crucial transportation corridors.
District officials have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel along NH-37 until the road is declared safe and fully operational. Travelers have also been urged to follow official advisories and road condition updates issued by the administration.
“All possible efforts are being made to remove the debris, restore traffic movement, and assist stranded travellers. Road restoration work is progressing on a priority basis,” an official said.
NH-37 remains a vital lifeline for Manipur, especially as it serves as a key route for transporting essential commodities into the state. Any prolonged disruption along the highway can significantly affect supply chains and movement of goods.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to restore normal traffic movement as quickly as possible.
