Manipur: Over 2 Kg Heroin Seized, Two Alleged PLA Cadres Arrested in Statewide Security Crackdown

Imphal, July 2: Security forces intensified anti-drug and counter-insurgency operations across Manipur, leading to the seizure of more than 2 kilograms of suspected heroin and the arrest of two alleged cadres of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) during separate operations conducted on June 30 and July 1.

According to Manipur Police, the coordinated operations targeted narcotics trafficking, insurgent activities and other criminal networks, resulting in multiple arrests and the recovery of a substantial quantity of contraband.

In one of the major operations on July 1, security personnel intercepted a four-wheeler in the Porompat area of Imphal East district. Two occupants—Bigyan Baniya (21), a resident of Tuilaphai in Kangpokpi district, and Manoj Chettry (27) from Kohima, Nagaland—were taken into custody.

During a search of the vehicle, officials recovered 168 soap cases containing suspected Heroin No. 4, weighing approximately 2 kilograms. The suspected narcotics and the vehicle used for transportation were seized for further investigation.

In another operation on the same day, Manipur Police arrested an alleged active People’s Liberation Army (PLA) cadre, identified as Oinam Kalajit alias Yaikhomba Singh (55) of Ngairangbam Mayai Leikai, from Taobungkhok under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district.

Police alleged that the accused was involved in the illegal transportation of arms and ammunition and is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

Earlier, on June 30, another alleged PLA cadre, Sairem Bolex Singh alias Pamel (26) of Yurembam Mayai Leikai, was arrested from Sagoltongba Makha Leikai, also under the jurisdiction of Patsoi Police Station. Officials alleged that he was involved in extortion-related activities.

Meanwhile, authorities have further strengthened security arrangements to ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential commodities across the state. On July 1, security forces escorted 531 vehiclessafely along National Highway-37, deploying convoy protection and maintaining heightened surveillance on vulnerable stretches of the route.

Officials said area domination patrols, search operations, and counter-insurgency exercises are continuing across both hill and valley districts to maintain law and order.

To enhance security, police have also established 115 checkpoints (Nakas) across the state to monitor movement, prevent criminal activities, and curb the operations of insurgent groups.

Authorities stated that such coordinated operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, insurgency, and other security challenges in Manipur.
