Two Assam Rifles Personnel Killed in Alleged Ambush on Convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul District
Imphal, Manipur: Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were killed after unidentified armed assailants allegedly ambushed a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles near Nungshang Kong in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday, officials and sources said.
According to sources, the convoy came under attack while moving through the area, leaving two Assam Rifles personnel critically injured.
The injured soldiers were initially being shifted to Imphal for advanced medical treatment. However, as their condition worsened, they were taken to the Assam Rifles camp at Sangshak in Ukhrul district, where both later succumbed to their injuries.
Following the attack, security forces launched an intensive search operation in the surrounding area to trace the perpetrators. Authorities have not yet identified those behind the alleged ambush, and the motive for the attack remains under investigation.
Reacting to the incident, Manipur Home Minister K. Govindas Singh expressed deep concern over the attack on the Assam Rifles convoy. In a social media post issued before the deaths of the two personnel were confirmed, he said he was saddened by the incident and described such acts of violence as detrimental to the peace and harmony of the state.
He also extended his thoughts and prayers to the injured personnel and expressed confidence that security agencies would take all necessary steps to identify and bring those responsible to justice in accordance with the law.
The Home Minister further appealed to the people of Manipur to remain united in promoting peace, security, and stability across the state.
Security has been intensified in the region, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
