Manipur: Heavy Rain Triggers Flash Floods and Severe Waterlogging Across Churachandpur, Thousands Affected

Churachandpur, Manipur: Heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon caused widespread flash floods and severe waterlogging across several parts of Churachandpur district, disrupting normal life and affecting thousands of residents. The sudden downpour inundated roads, residential areas, and business establishments, bringing traffic and commercial activities to a standstill.

According to reports, the rain began around 4:00 PM and continued for over an hour. The intense rainfall caused local streams and drainage channels to overflow, resulting in flash floods across multiple low-lying areas. Water quickly entered residential colonies, submerged roads, and left commuters stranded as vehicles were unable to pass through flooded streets.

Among the worst-affected areas were Lower Mission Veng, Zeliang, D. Phailian, Compound Veng, Lailam Veng, and New Lamka, where floodwaters entered homes and residential compounds. In several locations, ground-floor rooms were completely submerged, forcing families living near streams and vulnerable water channels to move to safer places.

Residents said the sudden flooding damaged household belongings, food supplies, furniture, and other essential items. Many shops and business establishments remained closed as floodwaters inundated commercial areas, causing significant disruption to economic activities.

Locals expressed concern over the recurring flood situation, blaming the district’s inadequate drainage system. According to residents, even a short period of heavy rainfall now causes streams and drains to overflow, leading to frequent flooding in several neighbourhoods.

Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries had been reported as of the latest update. District officials, along with emergency response teams, have started assessing the extent of the damage and are extending assistance to affected families as relief efforts continue.

The incident once again highlights the urgent need for improved drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation measures in Churachandpur to reduce the impact of seasonal heavy rainfall on local communities.
