Manipur: EMRS Loktak Principal Removed Amid Probe into Alleged Food Shortage and Student Welfare Issues
Imphal, August 4: The principal of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Zeikhuluang Loktak Project, has been relieved of his duties following allegations of food shortages and inadequate living conditions at the residential institution, triggering widespread concern over the welfare of tribal students.
The administrative action was taken on August 3 after reports emerged alleging that students had been facing a severe shortage of food and other essential supplies. According to the allegations, several students reportedly went without proper meals for days, prompting demands for immediate intervention from the state government and the concerned authorities.
Reports further claimed that the situation had become critical, with some students allegedly left hungry and emotionally distressed due to the lack of adequate food. Videos circulated on social media purportedly showed students receiving medical attention after complaining of weakness, intensifying public concern over the conditions at the school.
The Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) operates under a Central Government scheme designed to provide free quality education, boarding, lodging, and other essential facilities to tribal students across the country.
Principal Relieved, Attached to MSTEI Office
In response to the allegations, the Manipur Society for Tribal Educational Institution (MSTEI) under the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department issued an official order relieving the principal of EMRS Loktak from his responsibilities with immediate effect.
According to the order, issued with the approval of the competent authority, the principal has been transferred and attached to the office of the Member Secretary, MSTEI, until further orders. The notification also stated that the latest directive supersedes all previous orders related to the matter.
Calls for Comprehensive Inquiry
The action comes amid growing criticism over the reported shortage of food and essential facilities at the residential school.
Concerned citizens and organisations have urged the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations, identify those responsible for any lapses, and ensure accountability.
They have also called on the authorities to immediately restore adequate food supplies, healthcare services, accommodation, and other basic amenities for students to safeguard their health, safety, and overall well-being.
The incident has renewed attention on the implementation of welfare measures under the EMRS scheme and the need for effective monitoring of residential educational institutions to ensure that students receive the facilities and care they are entitled to.
