Manipur: Fall Armyworm and Brown Planthopper Infest Paddy Fields, Threatening Rice Harvest
Paddy fields nearing harvest in Manipur’s valley districts are facing a dual pest outbreak involving fall armyworms and brown planthoppers, raising concerns over crop losses and declining rice production.
The infestation has been reported in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts. Field assessments revealed damaged paddy crops, severed spikelets scattered across fields and armyworms feeding on rice plant leaves.
Farmers fear significant losses after investing months of hard work and resources in their crops, with harvesting only days away. They have appealed to the Agriculture Department and state authorities for immediate intervention and guidance on safe and effective pest control methods, particularly as the grains approach maturity.
Laishram Sadananda, a farmer from Top Khongnangmakhong, said fall armyworms attacked his five Sangams of paddy land at Wakha in Imphal East during the night, damaging both leaves and spikelets. He added that neighbouring fields had also suffered similar damage. Some farmers have reportedly used commercial pesticides, including “Rocket” and “Commando”, to protect their crops.
Konthoujam Thoiba, co-convenor of the COCOMI Farmers Wing, confirmed reports of both pests affecting paddy fields in several areas. He warned that the outbreak could significantly impact Manipur’s annual rice production.
Thoiba urged agricultural scientists and state experts to conduct local awareness campaigns and educate farmers about safe and effective pest management practices to minimise crop losses and protect the approaching harvest.
