Manipur: Infiltration Attempt Along Indo-Myanmar Border Foiled

News Summary

On May 14, 2025, Indian security forces successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Chandel and Tengnoupal districts. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched at the Libong-Duthang Junction under Tengnoupal police station. The operation led to the seizure of a cache of weapons and ammunition, including rifles, pistols, and various rounds of ammunition. This incident follows a recent encounter near New Samtal village in Chandel district, where ten Myanmar-based Kuki militants were neutralized by Indian forces. Security has been heightened in the region to prevent further cross-border activities.

Understanding the Indo-Myanmar Border Dynamics

Geographical and Strategic Significance

Manipur shares a 398-kilometer-long porous border with Myanmar, characterized by dense forests and hilly terrains. This challenging topography has historically facilitated cross-border movements, making it a hotspot for insurgent activities and smuggling operations.

Historical Context of Insurgency

The region has witnessed prolonged ethnic conflicts, particularly between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The 2021 military coup in Myanmar further exacerbated the situation, leading to an influx of militants and refugees into Manipur. These developments have intensified the security challenges along the border.

Recent Security Operations and Measures

Foiled Infiltration Attempts

In addition to the May 14 operation, security forces have been actively countering infiltration attempts. Notably, in October 2023, two cadres of the Chin Kuki Liberation Army (CKLA) were apprehended during an infiltration bid in Churachandpur district, leading to the seizure of arms and ammunition.

Enhanced Surveillance and Border Fencing

The Indian government has initiated fencing projects along vulnerable stretches of the Indo-Myanmar border to curb illegal crossings. Surveillance has been intensified, particularly at strategic points like Border Pillar 75 in T. Minou under Moreh police station.
