AFSPA Extended in Manipur for Another 6 Months from October 1, 2025
The Government of India has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Manipur for another six months, effective from October 1, 2025. The decision was taken citing the prevailing security situation in the state.
However, the extension will not apply to 13 police station areas that remain excluded from AFSPA. These include Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Irilbung, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, and Kakching police stations.
AFSPA, which grants special powers to the armed forces in “disturbed areas,” has been a subject of intense debate in Manipur for decades. While authorities argue that the law is necessary to maintain order, many civil society groups and human rights activists continue to demand its complete repeal.
The fresh extension reflects the government’s stance that while parts of the state have seen relative stability, certain areas still require strict security measures.
