A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday, completely gutting a grocery shop and causing heavy financial losses in Manipur’s Imphal East district, officials said. The blaze reduced the shop to ashes and destroyed cash worth approximately ₹1 lakh, along with groceries and other essential items.
The incident occurred at around 3:00 am at Phaknung Mayai Leikai under the jurisdiction of Lamlai Police Station. The affected shop belonged to Thoudam Joychandra, also known as Naocha Meitei (46), a local resident. According to fire service sources, the flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire structure before residents could respond effectively.
Preliminary assessments indicate that all stock, including grocery items and other stored materials, was completely destroyed in the fire, resulting in losses amounting to several lakhs of rupees. Cash kept inside the shop in different denominations was also burnt.
Upon receiving the emergency call, firefighters from the Imphal East district fire services rushed to the spot with two fire tenders, a water bowser, and necessary fire-fighting equipment. Fire personnel first evacuated nearby residents as a precautionary measure before launching operations to bring the blaze under control.
Despite sustained efforts by the firefighters, the shop was fully consumed by the fire due to its intensity. However, their timely intervention helped prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby residential houses, averting a larger disaster in the densely populated locality.
Officials said preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, though the exact cause will be confirmed after a detailed inquiry. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
Authorities have stated that a thorough assessment of the damages will be conducted by Friday, following which further action will be taken as per standard procedures. Local residents have expressed concern over recurring fire incidents and urged authorities to strengthen fire safety measures, especially in commercial areas.
