Attempt on Naga Village Chief’s Life, Wife Abducted in Chandel

An alleged attempted murder of a Naga village chief and the abduction of his wife in Chandel district has triggered strong condemnation from local organisations and community leaders.

Incident at Ravalan Village

According to reports, the incident occurred on the evening of March 19 at Ravalan village. The victim, village chief Sumpi Ngramrung, was allegedly attacked by around five armed militants suspected to be Kuki militants.

Sources said the attackers entered the chief’s residence at about 7 PM while his family members were inside the house. When the chief attempted to resist and protect his family, the militants allegedly opened fire on him, which was described as a direct attempt on his life.

Wife Abducted by Armed Group

After the attack, the assailants reportedly forcibly took the chief’s wife and pushed her into a waiting vehicle, fleeing the area toward Sajik Tampak.

The abduction has left the family and villagers deeply shaken and fearful, as the identity and whereabouts of the abducted woman remain uncertain.

Strong Condemnation by Student Body

The Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (ALT), particularly its Chakpikarong branch, strongly condemned the attack in an official statement.

The organisation described the incident as “deeply disturbing,” noting that targeting a community leader and abducting his spouse poses a serious threat to peace and communal harmony in the region.

Demands for Immediate Action

ALT has demanded:

Immediate rescue of the abducted woman

Swift arrest of the perpetrators

A thorough and transparent investigation into the attack

The group also urged authorities to act quickly to prevent further escalation of violence in the already fragile security situation in Manipur.

Concern Amid Ongoing Conflict

The incident comes at a time when Manipur continues to face ethnic tensions and security challenges following the violence that began in 2023. Community leaders say attacks targeting civilians and village authorities could further destabilise the region and worsen inter-community relations.

Local organisations have appealed to the authorities to ensure justice, restore safety for villagers, and prevent such incidents from recurring.
