BAFTA 2026: Boong Becomes Only Film from India to Secure Nomination
The critically acclaimed Manipuri film Boong has achieved a major international milestone by earning a nomination at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards 2026, becoming the only Indian film to be recognised this year.
The film has been nominated in the Best Children’s and Family Film category, marking a significant moment for Manipuri cinema on the global stage.
Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi in her feature-film debut, Boong tells a tender and emotionally resonant story of a young boy growing up in Manipur amid social uncertainty. The narrative follows a mischievous child, raised by a single mother, who yearns for the return of his absent father and hopes every year that he will come home during Holi to reunite their family.
The film stars first-time actor Gugun Kipgen in the lead role, alongside Bala Hijam, and is deeply rooted in Manipuri culture and everyday life. Notably, Boong was shot before the outbreak of the current conflict in Manipur, capturing a quieter, intimate portrait of the region.
Produced by Excel Entertainment, the film is backed by Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, and Shujaat Saudagar.
Lakshmipriya Devi brings extensive industry experience to her debut, having previously worked as an assistant director on several major projects, including Lakshya, Luck by Chance, Talaash, PK (with Raju Hirani), and A Suitable Boy (with Mira Nair), as well as the web series Dahaad.
Boong had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in the Discovery section and went on to be selected at several prestigious festivals, including:
- Warsaw International Film Festival 2024
- MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024
- 55th International Film Festival of India
- Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025
With its BAFTA 2026 nomination, Boong stands as a landmark achievement for films from the Northeast, highlighting Manipuri stories, voices, and talent on one of the world’s most respected cinematic platforms.
