Cargo Terminal at Imphal Airport Nears Completion, April Launch Targeted

The expansion of aviation infrastructure in Manipur has received a major boost, with the new cargo terminal at Imphal International Airport set to become operational by April 30, 2026.

Project Progress and Review

The progress of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) and associated infrastructure was recently reviewed by Anurag Bajpai, Additional Chief Secretary (Transport & TCI), during a high-level meeting held at the project office of the Airports Authority of India.

Officials confirmed that:

• The overall project has reached around 50 percent physical completion

• Construction activities have fully resumed after earlier delays caused by multiple challenges, including conflict-related disruptions

• Work has accelerated significantly since December 2025

The meeting was attended by representatives from multiple departments, including Transport, district administration, police, Public Works Department (PWD), Manipur Power Distribution Company Limited (MPDCL), CISF, and project teams.

April Launch for Cargo Terminal

A key highlight of the review was the cargo terminal, which is nearing readiness. Authorities have directed:

• Completion of installation of essential machinery

• Fast-tracking of security clearances from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security

• Ensuring the facility is fully operational by the end of April 2026

Once operational, the cargo terminal is expected to:

• Improve air freight capacity

• Support local businesses, agriculture, and trade

• Enhance logistics efficiency in the Northeast region

Overall Project Deadline

Authorities reiterated that all components of the airport expansion must be completed by December 31, 2026, including:

• New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB)

• Apron and aircraft handling areas

• Power and water supply systems

• Supporting infrastructure

Strict adherence to timelines has been emphasised to avoid further delays.

Land Acquisition and Connectivity Challenges

One of the critical concerns highlighted during the review is land acquisition for the approach road connecting the airport to the National Highway.

• The Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West and PWD officials have been directed to expedite the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) process

• Delays in land acquisition could affect the overall project timeline

Expansion of Air Connectivity

Parallel discussions were also held to enhance regional air connectivity. Plans include:

• Launch of Imphal–Silchar flight services at the earliest

• Exploring connectivity between Imphal and Dibrugarh Airport

These initiatives aim to:

• Strengthen intra-Northeast connectivity

• Boost economic and passenger movement

• Support regional development

Focus on Coordination and Timely Execution

During the review, Anurag Bajpai stressed the importance of:

• Strong inter-agency coordination

• Efficient execution of pending works

• Maintaining strict timelines

The upcoming cargo terminal and airport expansion project mark a significant step toward transforming Imphal into a key aviation and logistics hub in Northeast India, with long-term benefits for trade, connectivity, and economic growth.
