CYCLONIC STORM “MONTHA” WEAKENS, BUT HEAVY RAIN CONTINUES ACROSS MANY REGIONS

New Delhi, October 29, 2025:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed weather bulletin for the period 29 October to 2 November 2025, highlighting widespread rain and thunderstorm activity across large parts of India following the weakening of Cyclonic Storm “Montha.”

Cyclone Montha Weakens Over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

The Cyclonic Storm “Montha”, which had intensified over the Bay of Bengal earlier this week, has now weakened into a deep depression. As of 0830 hrs IST on Wednesday, the system was centered over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana.

Another depression lies over the east-central Arabian Sea, influencing weather patterns across western and central India.

Regional Forecast Highlights

South Peninsular India

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of the southern peninsula.

Telangana: Isolated areas are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) on 29 October, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Rayalaseema: Expect very heavy rainfall on 29 October and scattered rainfall up to 31 October.

Kerala, Mahe, and North Interior KarnatakaLight to moderate showers and thunderstorms are expected, with isolated heavy rainfall in some pockets.

Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep: Likely to witness thunderstorms with lightning on 29–30 October.

East and Central India

Moisture from the weakening cyclone and easterly winds will trigger widespread rainfall across eastern and central regions.

Bihar and JharkhandHeavy rainfall likely on 30–31 October, with very heavy showersin isolated locations of Bihar.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & SikkimModerate to heavy rain predicted between 30 October and 1 November.

Odisha, Chhattisgarh, East & West Madhya Pradesh, VidarbhaThunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–50 kmph) are expected on 29–30 October.

Vidarbha may receive very heavy rainfall on 29 October due to moisture convergence.

West India

Under the influence of the Arabian Sea depression, parts of western India are set to experience active monsoon-like conditions.

Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and MarathwadaIsolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on 29 October.

Gujarat, Saurashtra & KutchIntermittent rainfall with thunderstorms from 29–31 October, possibly intense at isolated places.

Lightning activity is also expected across Maharashtra and Gujarat through the forecast period.

Northeast India

Rainfall activity will gradually increase towards the end of the forecast period.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & MeghalayaModerate to heavy rainfall expected on 31 October – 1 November.

Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & TripuraLight to moderate rain and thunderstorm on 1 November, with lightning activity across the region between 30 October and 1 November.

Northwest India

East Uttar PradeshHeavy rainfall expected on 30–31 October.

East Rajasthan and West Uttar PradeshThunderstorms with lightning on 29–30 October.

• Wind speeds may reach 30–40 kmph, but no significant change in temperatures is expected across the northwestern plains for the next week.
