Man Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Minor in Imphal; Sent to Judicial Custody
The Manipur Police has arrested a 24-year-old man on charges of sexually assaulting a minor in Imphal West district, officials said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Bachaspatimayum Rohit Sharma (24), a resident of Thoubal Leishangthem Wangmataba in Thoubal district, was apprehended by a team from Lamphel Police Station on February 17, 2026, following a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother.
Incident Details
According to the complaint, the minor had gone missing from their rented residence in the Lamphel area on the night of February 16. The next morning, around 6 am, she was found on Governor Road in Imphal city.
Upon being questioned, the victim reportedly stated that she had gone with the accused to an unidentified restaurant, where she was sexually assaulted. She was later allegedly abandoned at a location in Khwairamband Bazar.
Court Proceedings
Police produced the accused before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, on February 18, 2026. During the investigation, the accused reportedly admitted to the charges, according to submissions made before the court.
He has been remanded to judicial custody until February 23. The court further directed the Investigating Officer to produce him before the Special POCSO Court, Imphal West, after completion of the remand period.
Rehabilitation and Support
Officials indicated that necessary procedures under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act are being followed. The victim is expected to receive appropriate medical care, counselling, and rehabilitation support as mandated under law.
