Manipur Excise Department Destroys Seized Liquor Valued at Over ₹84 Lakh in Imphal
The Manipur Excise Department has destroyed a large consignment of seized alcoholic beverages, amounting to more than 18,000 litres and valued at over ₹84 lakh, as part of the state’s ongoing enforcement of liquor prohibition laws.
The destruction was carried out following directives issued by the Commissioner of Excise, Manipur, in line with the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1991, which prohibits the manufacture, sale, transport, and consumption of alcohol in the state.
According to official sources, the seized liquor was incinerated at the Excise Headquarters complex in Lamphelpat, located in Imphal West district, on Saturday.
The consignment comprised alcohol confiscated by excise units from multiple districts between October 30, 2025, and January 31, 2026, after being found in illegal possession or transported without valid permits.
Items destroyed included approximately 8,466.68 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) valued at ₹50.8 lakh, 9,621.69 litres of beer worth ₹28.86 lakh, along with smaller quantities of wine (31.52 litres) and distilled indigenous country liquor (4.60 litres). The total value of the destroyed stock exceeded ₹84 lakh, officials said.
Prior to destruction, the seized liquor had been stored in the department’s malkhana within the Lamphelpat office premises. However, officials noted that the storage facility had become overcrowded due to the continuous accumulation of confiscated items, prompting the need for disposal to create space for future seizures.
The Excise Department said such destruction drives will continue as part of its sustained efforts to strictly enforce prohibition laws across the state.
