Manipur Police Caution Against Fake News on Litan Violence, Warn of Legal Action
Manipur Police on Tuesday issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news, rumours, and misleading information related to the recent violence in Litan village of Ukhrul district, stating that strict legal action will be taken against offenders.
In an official police bulletin, authorities said that circulating misinformation or content intended to instigate communal tension would be treated as a serious offence, including charges related to sedition, and prosecuted under relevant laws.
The advisory follows the circulation of several videos on social media claiming that security forces, allegedly in collusion with Kuki militants, had set fire to Tangkhul houses in Litan Sareikhong, with reports suggesting that over 20 houses were burnt around midnight.
Police clarified that these claims are false and misleading. According to officials, upon receiving information about an arson incident, Manipur Police immediately deployed teams to the area and called in the fire brigade. An Army team also arrived shortly thereafter to assess the situation.
Police further stated that some local youths demanded that the security personnel leave the area and later recorded videos alleging that security forces were responsible for torching the houses. These allegations, the police said, are unfounded and baseless.
Authorities reiterated their appeal to the public and media to exercise restraint and responsibility, emphasizing that anyone found spreading false or provocative content would face legal consequences.
