Manipur Woman, Assam Transgender Allegedly Assaulted in South Delhi; Police Begin Probe

A woman from Manipur and her transgender friend from Assam were allegedly assaulted near the Saket District Court Complex in South Delhi on Sunday evening after they objected to inappropriate remarks made by a group of men, according to police.

Authorities from the Delhi Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify the suspects involved.

Incident Details

According to the complaint filed with police, the two victims were walking through a nearby park in the Saket area when a group of men allegedly made offensive and inappropriate comments toward them.

Police said the situation escalated when the woman from Manipur objected to the remarks. This reportedly led to a confrontation between the group and the victims.

During the altercation, the attackers allegedly physically assaulted the woman, and belts were reportedly used during the attack.

An officer involved in the investigation said the incident took place quickly but resulted in injuries to the victim.

Victim Taken to Hospital

Following the assault, the woman was taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Doctors conducted an initial assessment and confirmed that she had sustained minor injuries. She is currently stable.

Police officials stated that they remain in close contact with the victim and are monitoring the situation closely.

Police Investigation Underway

The Delhi Police have initiated a formal probe into the incident. Investigators are:

• Reviewing CCTV footage from the Saket area

• Attempting to identify the suspects involved

• Checking whether the individuals live in the local area

• Recording statements from witnesses and victims

Authorities have assured that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible once they are identified.

Similar Incident in South Delhi

The assault follows another recent case reported in Malviya Nagar, where a couple allegedly used racial slurs against three students from Arunachal Pradesh.

In that case, the Delhi Police registered an FIR and later arrested the accused.

Government Response

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met the affected students from the earlier incident and assured them that the government would take strict action against discrimination.

She stated that mistreatment, racial abuse, or unfair behaviour toward people from the Northeast will not be tolerated in the national capital.

Growing Concern Over Safety

The recent incidents have once again raised concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast living or studying in major Indian cities. Civil society groups and activists have repeatedly called for stronger awareness, stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, and greater sensitivity toward cultural diversity.

Police have urged anyone with information about the Saket assault case to come forward as the investigation continues.
