Positive Response from Amit Shah on NRC Updation Before Census: N Biren Singh
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday, August 18, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had given a “positive response” to the demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before the Census.
Speaking to reporters at Imphal airport after returning from New Delhi, Biren Singh said he met Shah to discuss the prevailing situation in Manipur and several key issues, including NRC updation, the ongoing economic blockade and the counter-blockade.
According to Biren Singh, the blockades have contributed to a rise in the prices of essential commodities in the state.
He said Shah listened to the concerns with “deep concern and patience” and indicated that positive steps could be taken on the issues raised during the meeting.
Biren Singh also referred to steps taken by the Manipur government in 2023 and 2024 towards NRC updation, including a Cabinet decision and a resolution passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The former Chief Minister said illegal immigration remained a serious concern for Manipur and could have long-term consequences for the state. He claimed that 9,026 unauthorised villages had been detected so far.
Biren Singh said updating the NRC before the Census was a demand raised in the interests of Manipur’s indigenous population. He also appealed to people to pursue the demand peacefully and avoid violence.
Expressing hope for further action from the Centre, Biren Singh said he expected positive steps to be taken in line with the demand for NRC updation before the Census.
