14 CSOs from Manipur Head to Delhi to Raise NRC and Census Concerns with Central Government
A joint delegation representing 14 civil society organisations (CSOs), along with representatives of the Naga, Kom and Meitei Pangal communities, left Imphal for New Delhi on Thursday, August 20, to raise concerns related to the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the delay in the Census.
The delegation is scheduled to meet central leaders in New Delhi and seek their intervention on issues concerning the implementation of the NRC and the conduct of the Census in Manipur.
Representatives of the participating organisations said they would present their concerns before central leaders and seek clarity and concrete action on the issues during their meetings.
Those who spoke about the delegation’s Delhi visit included SM Jalal, president of AMMOCOC; Gaikhiam Thaimei, vice president of RNYOM; Serto Hao Kom, president of Kom Union Manipur; and Dr K. Heera Kabui, president of Kabui Union.
The delegation’s visit comes amid continued discussions and protests in Manipur over the NRC and Census. Civil society organisations have been pressing the Centre to address their concerns and provide clarity on the proposed NRC process and the delay in conducting the Census.
The joint participation of representatives from different communities is aimed at placing their concerns before the Centre and seeking intervention on the issues affecting the state.
