Manipur: 14 Arrested in Crackdown on Drugs, Illegal Fuel, Curfew Violations

Imphal: In a series of coordinated operations across Manipur, central security forces along with state police arrested 14 individuals for offences ranging from drug peddling and illegal fuel transport to curfew violations.

Drug Seizure Case

In one operation in Imphal:

  • A 21-year-old, Md. Warish, was arrested near a public hospital
  • Police seized 151 bottles of “Codiva” cough syrup containing Codeine phosphate, often misused as an addictive substance
  • Authorities said such cough syrups are frequently diverted for illegal drug consumption and trafficking

Illegal Fuel Transport

In a separate कार्रवाई:

  • Security forces intercepted seven vehicles transporting fuel in plastic containers toward Moreh, a key border town
  • A total of 48 plastic containers carrying suspected petrol/diesel were seized

Officials highlighted that:

  • Sale and transport of fuel in loose containers is prohibited under the Essential Commodities Act 1955
  • The restriction aims to prevent:
    • Hoarding
    • Black marketing
    • Panic buying during tense situations

Drivers of multiple vehicles, including vans and pick-up trucks from districts like Chandel and Tengnoupal, were taken into custody for violating these norms.

Curfew Violations and Arrests

Meanwhile, amid a night curfew in the greater Imphal area:

  • Six individuals were arrested for allegedly:
    • Engaging in activities that disturb public peace
    • Violating curfew restrictions

Police stated these actions are part of intensified efforts to maintain law and order during the ongoing security situation.

Ongoing Enforcement Measures

Authorities emphasised that:

  • Joint operations will continue across sensitive areas
  • Strict action will be taken against:
    • Drug trafficking networks
    • Illegal fuel trade
    • Individuals violating curfew or inciting unrest

The crackdown reflects heightened vigilance by security agencies as the state continues to deal with law and order challenges, with a focus on preventing illegal activities that could further destabilise the situation.
