Leishemba Sanajaoba Urges Centre to Set Up Electronics and Garment PSUs in Manipur
Rajya Sabha MP and titular King of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba, has appealed to the Central Government to establish Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the state, particularly in the electronics, electrical, and garment sectors, to boost industrial development and employment opportunities.
Speaking during the Zero Hour in Parliament on Friday, the BJP leader highlighted the importance of strengthening manufacturing infrastructure in the northeastern region, especially in Manipur. He stressed that such initiatives would contribute significantly to achieving self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) while enhancing local industrial capacity.
Sanajaoba pointed out that the state lacks major corporate or industrial establishments, with only a handful of small-scale enterprises operating at present. He noted that the creation of PSUs could play a key role in addressing the growing issue of unemployment among educated youths.
Referring to official statistics, the MP stated that Manipur has a literacy rate of 76.94 percent, according to the 2011 Census, but continues to face employment challenges. He added that the state’s unemployment rate stands at 4.7 percent, which is higher than the national average of 3.2 percent, leaving many qualified young people without stable job opportunities.
He emphasised that setting up PSUs in sectors such as electronics manufacturing, electrical equipment production, and garment industries would help develop strong local supply chains, reduce reliance on imports, and promote the adoption of modern technologies. These industries, he said, have the potential to generate large-scale employment and stimulate economic growth.
Sanajaoba further expressed confidence that expanding industrial activities in the state could also help curb social issues by providing productive employment avenues for young people, thereby reducing their vulnerability to drug abuse and crime.
Urging the Centre to take concrete steps, he said the establishment of such PSUs would not only strengthen Manipur’s economy but also support long-term development in the region.
