Imphal, Manipur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially nominated senior party leader Adhikarimayum (A.) Sarda Devi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Manipur. She filed her nomination papers on June 8 at the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
Sarda Devi submitted her nomination before the Returning Officer in the presence of Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, BJP legislators, and senior party functionaries who accompanied her during the filing process.
Her nomination marks a significant moment in the party’s political journey in the state. Sarda Devi previously served as the president of the BJP’s Manipur unit and holds the distinction of being the first woman to lead the party in the state. Her candidature is expected to strengthen women’s representation in national politics and could pave the way for her entry into the Rajya Sabha.
As per the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India, June 8 was the last date for submission of nomination papers. Scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for June 9, while candidates may withdraw their nominations until June 11.
If required, voting for the Rajya Sabha seat will be held on June 18 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the counting of votes set to begin at 5:00 PM on the same day.
The Rajya Sabha elections will also be conducted in several other states, including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Rajasthan.
Political observers note that the BJP currently enjoys a comfortable majority in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, making the party’s candidate a strong favourite to secure the seat.
The nomination of A. Sarda Devi reflects the BJP’s continued confidence in her leadership and contribution to the party’s growth in Manipur over the years.
