Manipur: KKL Announces Indefinite Highway Blockade Following Clash Over Assam Rifles Post

Ukhrul, June 9: The Katho Katamnao Long (KKL), a prominent Tangkhul youth organisation operating in Manipur’s Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, has declared an indefinite blockade on vehicular movement along highways within its area of influence. The decision comes in the wake of allegations that personnel of the 40th Assam Rifles used excessive force against protesters opposing the establishment of a temporary security post at New Haven.

The controversy stems from an incident that occurred on Sunday during demonstrations against the newly set-up Assam Rifles camp. Local civil society groups have claimed that the temporary post was established without prior consultation or approval from the concerned village authorities.

In a statement issued by KKL Vice President Shanching Yanao, the organisation alleged that Assam Rifles personnel used force to disperse demonstrators at Finch Corner, Shokvao, and New Haven. According to the statement, security personnel reportedly carried out baton charges and opened fire during the confrontation.

KKL further claimed that several individuals sustained injuries during the incident, including its president and more than 20 women protesters. The injured were reportedly taken to Ukhrul District Hospital for medical treatment.

The youth body has appealed to major Tangkhul civil society organisations, including the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and the Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL), to extend support to the victims and pursue legal action against those allegedly responsible for the use of force.

According to the organisation, the highway blockade will remain in effect until its demands are fulfilled. These demands include a public apology from the Assam Rifles, removal of the temporary post at New Haven, and appropriate action against personnel allegedly involved in the incident.

Despite the restrictions, KKL stated that emergency healthcare services, essential public utilities, and accredited media personnel would be allowed to operate without hindrance to prevent disruption of critical services.

As of Monday, the Assam Rifles had not issued any official response regarding the allegations raised by the organisation.
