Manipur CM Launches Anti-Drug Campaign, Urges Youth to Build a Drug-Free Future
Imphal, August 2: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday called upon the youth of the state to stay away from drugs and actively contribute to nation-building, stating that a healthy and drug-free generation is crucial for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the state-level launch of the “Nasha Mukta Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyaan” held at Manipur University. The nationwide campaign was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from New Delhi and aims to strengthen the fight against substance abuse among young people across India.
The event was organised by the NSS Cell, Manipur University, in collaboration with the State NSS Cell under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
PM Modi Calls for a Drug-Free India
During his virtual address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that the dream of a developed India by 2047 can only be achieved through physically and mentally healthy youth. He urged young people across the country to reject drug abuse and actively participate in the nationwide anti-narcotics movement.
Echoing the Prime Minister’s message, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh said that the future of Manipur and the nation depends on responsible, disciplined, and drug-free youth who can drive social and economic development.
Youth Must Reject Drugs, Says CM
Addressing students, NSS volunteers, and dignitaries, the Chief Minister encouraged young people to avoid narcotics and dedicate themselves to serving society.
Reflecting on his own life, Khemchand Singh said he consciously chose to stay away from drugs even during periods when substance abuse was widespread, allowing him to focus on public service and leadership.
He urged the younger generation to make similar choices and become role models for society.
Government to Intensify Crackdown on Drug Networks
Expressing concern over the growing drug menace, the Chief Minister revealed that discussions with various non-governmental organisations had highlighted the existence of organised drug supply networks targeting young people.
He assured that the state government would continue strengthening its anti-drug operations and intensify action against drug traffickers while protecting the youth from falling victim to addiction.
Development Linked to a Healthy Generation
Highlighting Manipur’s strategic importance under India’s Act East Policy, Khemchand Singh said the state is poised to become the country’s gateway to Southeast Asia.
He noted that the government is working to complete the railway connectivity to Imphal by December 2028, which is expected to enhance trade, improve connectivity to Moreh, and strengthen economic ties with neighbouring countries.
However, he emphasised that these opportunities can only be fully realised if the state’s youth remain free from substance abuse and actively participate in the state’s development.
Appeal for Peace and Unity
The Chief Minister also underlined that sustainable development requires lasting peace and social harmony. He appealed to all communities to work together in restoring peace across Manipur while reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of violence, rebuilding trust among communities, and facilitating safe and free movement throughout the state.
The programme concluded with students, NSS volunteers, faculty members, and officials taking a pledge for a Drug-Free India, reaffirming their commitment to staying away from narcotics and spreading awareness against substance abuse.
