Manipur: Vehicles Torched, Assam Rifles Truck Overturned During Protest in Senapati
Senapati, July 15: Tension gripped Manipur’s Senapati district on Tuesday night after a protest outside an Assam Rifles Company Operating Base (COB) turned violent, resulting in vehicles being torched, a truck being overturned, and security forces reportedly using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The unrest began after messages circulated on social media claiming that a confrontation had taken place between the Assam Rifles and the Huthrong Brigade Headquarters of the Naga Army at Oklong village in the Mao-Maram subdivision.
Following the circulation of the messages, a large number of people gathered at the traffic point in Senapati town before marching towards the Assam Rifles COB. Protesters demanded the withdrawal of Assam Rifles personnel from the Oklong area.
During the demonstration, a parked Alto car outside the COB gate was set on fire, while a nearby public waiting shed was also torched by unidentified individuals.
According to sources, tensions began to subside after reports emerged that the Assam Rifles had withdrawn from Oklong village. However, while security personnel were returning from the area, some protesters allegedly overturned an Assam Rifles truck and set two Assam Rifles Gypsy vehicles ablaze.
As the situation escalated, security forces reportedly fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters and restore order.
The exact sequence of events, the extent of the property damage, and whether anyone sustained injuries could not be independently verified at the time of publishing this report. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
