Manipur: Civil Society Organisations Urge Governor to Restore Essential Supplies to Moreh

Imphal, July 15: Representatives of the Tamil Sangam, Gorkha Sena, and Manipuri Muslim Councilon Tuesday met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging immediate intervention to restore the supply of essential commodities, medicines, and healthcare services to the border town of Moreh.

The delegation submitted a memorandum at Raj Bhavan highlighting the growing humanitarian concerns in Moreh, stating that prolonged economic blockades have severely disrupted the movement of essential goods. According to the memorandum, the town is facing shortages of medicines, an inadequate availability of healthcare professionals, and a sharp increase in the prices of daily necessities.

The representatives said the situation has worsened as multiple blockades imposed by different groups continue to affect supply routes, making it difficult for residents to access basic necessities.

According to the memorandum, an indefinite economic blockade called by the United Naga Council (UNC), supported by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), has disrupted supplies to Kuki-Zo-dominated areas following the abduction and killing of six Naga civilians.

It further stated that Kuki civil society organisations subsequently launched counter-blockades along National Highway-2, affecting the movement of goods to Naga and Meitei areas. The memorandum also noted that the Foothills Naga Coordinating Committee (FNCC) has restricted the movement of Kuki-Zo people between Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, further impacting transportation and supply chains.

The delegation expressed concern that the prolonged blockades and curfew restrictions have resulted in acute shortages of food, medicines, and other essential commodities. It also highlighted the difficulties faced by students, with many reportedly stranded and several school hostels remaining closed due to the ongoing disruptions.

The memorandum comes as both the state and central governments continue efforts to restore normalcy in the region. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has held discussions with the UNC regarding the lifting of the blockade, while Kuki-Zo apex organisations have separately met officials of the Union Home Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau in New Delhi to seek protection, humanitarian assistance, and relief measures.

Authorities are continuing consultations with various stakeholders in an effort to restore uninterrupted movement of essential supplies and improve the humanitarian situation in the border town.
