Manipur: Two Killed, Three Injured in Tiddim Road Accident; Truck Driver Arrested Using CCTV Evidence
Imphal, August 7: Two people lost their lives and three others sustained serious injuries in a tragic road accident on Tiddim Road near Utlou Koubiliya Makhong, close to Imphal Airport, on Thursday. The truck driver, who allegedly fled the scene after the collision, was later arrested by Manipur Police after investigators traced his movements using CCTV footage.
According to police, the accident involved a commercial truck bearing registration number NL07AA-5416. Preliminary findings suggest that the vehicle was being driven at an excessive speed and in a reckless manner, resulting in a fatal collision along one of Imphal’s busiest roads.
The impact of the crash claimed the lives of two individuals on the spot, while three others suffered serious injuries. The injured victims were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities said the injured remain under close medical observation.
Soon after the accident, the truck driver allegedly escaped from the scene in an apparent attempt to evade arrest. Police immediately launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage captured by surveillance cameras installed along Tiddim Road.
Using the footage, investigators reconstructed the truck’s route before and after the accident, enabling them to identify the suspect and trace his whereabouts. Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, police arrested Kshetrimayum Toni Singh (35), a resident of Huidrom Awang Leikai, Pungdongbam, under Lamlai Police Station.
Police confirmed that the accused has been taken into custody and that legal proceedings have been initiated. The investigation is continuing to determine all circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Following the incident, traffic authorities once again appealed to motorists to strictly follow traffic regulations, maintain speed limits, and drive responsibly, especially on major roads such as Tiddim Road, where heavy traffic movement significantly increases the risk of serious accidents.
Officials also urged commercial vehicle drivers to exercise extra caution while operating heavy vehicles to help prevent further loss of life and improve road safety across the state.
