Manipur: Mao Students’ Union Welcomes Approval for 100-Seat Government Medical College in Senapati
Senapati, Manipur: The Mao Students’ Union (MSU) has welcomed the Manipur government’s in-principle approval for establishing a new 100-seat government medical college in Senapati district, describing the project as a historic step for healthcare, medical education and development in the hill region.
The union expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and the state Council of Ministers for approving the long-awaited project.
Cabinet Approves New Medical College in Senapati
The Manipur State Cabinet, which met at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Mantripukhri on August 11, 2026, granted in-principle approval for the establishment of a government medical college in Senapati district.
The proposed institution will have an annual intake capacity of 100 MBBS students.
The project is expected to expand access to medical education while strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the district.
Senapati District Hospital to Be Upgraded
As part of the proposed medical college project, the existing Senapati District Hospital will undergo comprehensive upgrades.
The hospital infrastructure will be strengthened to meet the clinical, teaching and other regulatory requirements necessary for a medical college.
The planned improvements are expected to enhance healthcare services for residents while providing the clinical facilities required for training medical students.
MSU Calls Approval a Historic Milestone
The Mao Students’ Union welcomed the Cabinet decision and thanked Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and the ministers for clearing what it described as a long-standing public demand.
The union said the medical college represents an important development for Senapati and could help address longstanding gaps in healthcare and higher education opportunities in the hill region.
