Manipur: Churachandpur Private Schools Advised to Suspend Classes Amid Dengue, HFMD Rise
Manipur: Private schools and colleges in Churachandpur have been advised to suspend regular classes from August 26 to 30 following a rise in reported cases of dengue, typhoid and hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in the district.
The advisory was issued by the Churachandpur District Private Schools and Colleges Association (CDPSCA) after a joint meeting with the district Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to help prevent the spread of infections among students and staff.
School and college managements have been asked to assess the local health situation and decide on closure while giving priority to student safety and academic requirements.
Institutions that continue classes have been advised to reduce crowding, avoid large gatherings, maintain physical distancing and improve sanitation. Students and staff showing symptoms of illness have also been urged to stay home.
Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar held an emergency meeting at the Mini Secretariat in Tuibong to review the health situation and discuss measures to contain the spread of the diseases.
Health officials said most flu-like and skin-related illnesses are generally self-limiting, but stressed the need for early preventive measures because of their rapid spread.
The Chief Medical Officer and Zonal Education Officer have been directed to conduct awareness programmes in villages, schools and colleges. Authorities have also been instructed to identify and remove mosquito-breeding sites within 50 to 100 metres of residential areas to help control dengue transmission.
Officials said HFMD is mainly affecting children aged zero to five years, with symptoms including fever, rashes and blisters. No deaths have been reported, and affected children are receiving symptomatic treatment.
Later, the Deputy Commissioner inspected the District Hospital and directed officials to establish a dedicated medical expert cell to monitor the situation. A public helpline is also expected to be introduced to provide health-related information and assistance to residents.
