Manipur: Special Court Sentences Man to 20 Years in Jail in POCSO Case
Imphal: A Special Court in Imphal West has sentenced 32-year-old Ningthoujam Ramesh Singh alias Tondonba to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Special Court (POCSO) Judge Yumkham Rother pronounced the sentence on Monday in connection with a case reported in November 2021 under Sekmai Police Station.
According to the prosecution, Singh sexually assaulted the minor on multiple occasions on November 13 and 14, 2021, while her father was away. Police arrested him on November 19, 2021, and later filed a chargesheet under Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
During the trial, the prosecution examined 12 witnesses and produced documentary and material evidence. After considering the evidence and arguments from both sides, the court found that the charges of penetrative sexual assault had been proved beyond reasonable doubt.
The court convicted Singh under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and sentenced him to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment. It also directed the Manipur government to provide ₹3 lakh compensation to the victim.
The period already spent in custody during the investigation and trial will be set off against the sentence, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
