Manipur: Bird Traps Seized, Two Dead Birds Recovered During Anti-Poaching Drives
Forest officials and wildlife activists seized bird traps and recovered two dead birds during anti-poaching operations in Imphal West district on Sunday.
The drives were conducted by the Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife & Biodiversity (JCCWB), in coordination with local forest beat offices and under the supervision of Imphal West Range Forest Officer Kiranjit Yumnam.
At Tharoijam, a joint team from the JCCWB and Iroisemba Beat Office searched open fields following reports of bird trapping with traps and airguns. Three bird traps and two dead birds were recovered.
A separate operation at Khamenbi Lamyai wetland in Mayang Imphal led to the removal of several trapping nets from nearby paddy fields. The seized nets were later destroyed at the Mayang Imphal Forest Beat Office.
JCCWB convenor Romesh Ningthoujam said the wetland operation revealed evidence of bird trapping at multiple locations. He urged residents to avoid trapping wild birds and using airguns, warning that offenders could face legal action under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
