BJP Chooses Y Khemchand Singh as Legislative Leader; CM Oath Expected Soon
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday elected Singjamei MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh as its legislative party leader in Manipur, clearing the path for his appointment as the state’s next Chief Minister.
Party sources said Singh is likely to be sworn in shortly, ending months of political uncertainty in a state grappling with prolonged ethnic tensions and governance challenges.
Khemchand has recently been in the spotlight for his visit to Kuki villages in Litan, an initiative that stood out amid prevailing mistrust and security concerns. Political observers termed the move a rare gesture aimed at rebuilding inter-community communication.
With over two decades in public life, the 58-year-old leader has held several key positions. He served as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly between 2017 and 2022, steering the House through periods of intense political activity.
After the 2022 polls, he joined the BJP-led Cabinet, managing departments such as MAHUD, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, and Education, overseeing both urban administration and grassroots development.
Beyond politics, Khemchand is known for his visible participation in cultural events. Videos of him dancing during Christmas and Kut festival celebrations recently gained widespread attention, reinforcing his image as a leader comfortable across cultural spaces.
The BJP’s move is seen as an effort to project administrative experience combined with outreach credentials as Manipur searches for stability and lasting peace.
