Gunfight Reported in Tamenglong District, Manipur

gunfight between armed groups was reported in parts of Tamenglong district, creating panic among villagers and raising security concerns in the region.

What Happened

According to reports, an exchange of fire broke out early in the morning near villages under the Nungba area, where rival armed groups allegedly confronted each other. The sudden gunfight caused fear among residents, forcing many villagers to flee their homes and move to safer locations.

Sources indicated that the clash involved cadres linked to National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) and the Zeliangrong United Front, two armed organisations that have previously had tensions in parts of the hill districts of Manipur.

Villagers in Fear

Local reports said that gunshots were heard for several minutes, prompting residents in nearby villages to take shelter or move away from the area. Civil society organisations and village authorities have expressed concern that such clashes put the lives of innocent civilians at serious risk.

Community leaders also appealed to the armed groups to cease hostilities and withdraw from civilian areas, stressing that villagers should not become victims of factional violence.

Security Situation

Police and security personnel were reportedly alerted after the incident, and authorities are monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation. However, details regarding casualties or injuries were not immediately confirmed.

Background

The hill districts of Manipur, including Tamenglong and Noney, have occasionally witnessed armed confrontations between different insurgent factions, often related to territorial influence or organisational rivalry. Such clashes have repeatedly drawn criticism from local civil bodies, which say they endanger civilians and disrupt normal life in the region.

Current Situation

As of the latest reports, the situation in the affected areas remains tense but under observation, with villagers and local leaders urging all armed groups to respect civilian safety and restore peace.
