Manipur: Imphal-Japan Harmony Week 2026 Begins to Promote Cultural and Educational Relations
The week-long Imphal-Japan Harmony Week 2026 commenced on Sunday at the Imphal Peace Museum, Maibam Lotpa Ching, Nambol, with the aim of strengthening cultural and educational relations between Manipur and Japan.
The programme is jointly organised by the Imphal Peace Museum and the Manipur Tourism Forum under the aegis of the Embassy of Japan in India as part of Japan Month celebrations. The event will continue until November 7.
Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur inaugurated the programme in the presence of Art and Culture Secretary N. Praveen, senior officials, artists, students and civil society representatives.
Addressing the gathering, Thakur highlighted the historical connection between Manipur and Japan, stating that relations shaped by the suffering of the Second World War have gradually developed into friendship, peace and mutual understanding. He also emphasised opportunities for cooperation in education, technology, healthcare, tourism and sustainable development.
N. Praveen encouraged students and young people to actively participate in the activities and explore educational and career opportunities in Japan.
The seven-day programme features exhibitions showcasing historical photographs and archival materials on Manipur-Japan relations, daily Japanese film screenings, cultural exchanges, panel discussions and educational activities.
The programme is supported by the Government of Manipur, Sasakawa Peace Foundation and Japan Foundation, New Delhi.
The Imphal Peace Museum, located at Red Hill, commemorates the historic Battle of Imphal in 1944, during which thousands of Japanese and Allied soldiers lost their lives. The museum now promotes peace, reconciliation and international friendship.
