Manipur: Massive Search Operation Launched in Noney After Deadly Clash Between Rival Naga Groups

Imphal, November 5, 2026: Security forces comprising over 500 personnel launched a large-scale search operation in Manipur’s Noney district on Thursday morning following a deadly armed confrontation between suspected rival Naga groups that resulted in three deaths and left two others injured.

The operation commenced at around 3:30 AM in Taodaijang and Kekru Naga villages. Personnel from Manipur Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), CoBRA and Assam Rifles took part in the joint exercise. During the operation, security personnel conducted searches and checked the identities of local residents.

The security operation was initiated after a gunfight broke out at Taodaijang village at approximately 1:55 AM on Wednesday, around 19 km east of Nungba Police Station.

The suspected involvement of NSCN (IM) and the Jenchui faction of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF-J) has been reported. However, NSCN (IM) has not released any official statement concerning the incident.

Following the exchange of fire, local residents recovered three bodies from the area, while two individuals were reportedly injured. The ZUF-Jenchui faction identified two deceased persons, M. Thaimei and G. Kamson, as its members.

The faction claimed that its cadres had faced a combined force involving NSCN (IM), the Kamson faction of ZUF (ZUF-K) and NSCN-K (Niki Sumi). However, the allegations remain unverified independently.

The third victim was identified as Aihung Khumba of Pungmon Chingchen village. His connection with any armed group has not been confirmed.

Amid the violence, local residents and women’s organisations reportedly stepped in and appealed to the rival groups to cease firing in an effort to prevent further loss of life.

Separately, allegations of missing civilian property during security operations have emerged from Kangpokpi district. The Chingdai Area Core Committee (CACCO), representing the Saikul sub-division, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Manipur Police, CRPF and CoBRA personnel over an alleged incident during a combing operation at S. Phailengkot village on October 20.

CACCO claimed that ₹40,000 in cash, livestock, solar equipment, tools and mobile accessories were allegedly taken from residents during the operation. The committee demanded that all the reported missing items be returned by November 4.

It also warned that formal criminal complaints would be lodged against the personnel concerned and their commanding officers if the demands were not fulfilled.

The latest developments have brought renewed attention to security operations and tensions in Manipur, which has been affected by ethnic violence since 2023.
