Manipur: Over 200 Naga Households Displaced Amid Naga-Kuki Tensions
More than 200 Naga households have reportedly been displaced after houses in eight villages across Manipur’s Noney, Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts were destroyed, according to a memorandum submitted to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on October 1.
The memorandum, submitted by the Former & Senior Leaders’ Forum of Zeliangrong Civil Organisations (FSLFZCOs), stated that residents of frontier settlements, including Sempat Naga, Gaidunluang and Chamripeu, fled their homes amid fears of further attacks.
The forum cited growing tensions between Naga and Kuki communities and referred to recent incidents in Kamjong district where civilians were killed. It urged the government to recognise the displaced Zeliangrong families as internally displaced persons (IDPs) and provide them with standard relief assistance.
The FSLFZCOs also identified Konsaram and Chawangkining as vulnerable border villages and called for immediate deployment of security forces.
The forum further sought stronger security measures along National Highway 37, the Imphal-Jiribam route, including security escorts for public vehicles six days a week or an extended daily security presence along the highway.
It also called for formal reorganisation to address inter-district boundary disputes, which it said contribute to continuing land-related tensions between Naga and Kuki communities.
