Manipur Polo International Returns to Mapal Kangjeibung, Reviving Heritage and Tourism
After a two-year pause, the Manipur Polo International tournament is set to return to Mapal Kangjeibung, the world’s oldest polo ground, bringing renewed energy to the state’s sporting and tourism landscape. Organized by the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association (MHRPA), the 15th edition of the tournament will be held from November 22 to 29, marking a significant moment for both polo enthusiasts and cultural preservationists.
According to Steering Committee chairman Prof. Ch. Priyoranjan, international teams from Colombia and the United States have already confirmed their participation, while Spain and Italy are awaiting final clearance. The Indian lineup will feature teams from the India Polo Association (India A), Chhattisgarh, and Manipur (India B).
Launched in 1991, the Manipur Polo International has grown into one of the most anticipated sporting events in the region, drawing packed stands and enthusiastic local support year after year. For many global players, the event serves as a symbolic return to the origins of polo, with Manipur’s traditional Sagol Kangjei widely acknowledged as the ancient precursor to the modern sport.
Prof. Ch. Chittaranjan highlighted the tournament’s role in inspiring Manipur’s youth, noting that the number of active polo players in the state has now crossed 200. He also emphasized the event’s contribution to raising awareness about the endangered Manipuri pony, turning the tournament into an important platform for conservation efforts.
The MHRPA further stated that the tournament continues to create pathways for local talent, with several Manipuri polo players now employed in departments such as the Veterinary Department, Manipur Police, and Assam Rifles. The association appealed for widespread public support not just for the tournament, but also for its long-term mission aligned with government initiatives like the 2016 Polo Policy.
The press conference announcing the tournament was also attended by N. Bedajeet Singh, chairman of the Technical Committee; N. Tombi Raj, chairman of the Media Committee; and Col. L. Manongba (Retd), president of the Manipur Equestrian Association.
With international attention returning and public enthusiasm high, the upcoming edition of the Manipur Polo International is expected to reaffirm the state’s legacy as the birthplace of modern polo and strengthen its commitment to preserving the timeless Manipuri pony.
