Naga-Kuki Ethnic Clash During UNC Shutdown in Kangpokpi district
Fresh tension gripped parts of Manipur on Tuesday after clashes broke out between members of the Naga community and Kuki community during a shutdown called in Naga-inhabited areas.
Shutdown Call and Background
The shutdown was announced by the United Naga Council in coordination with the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur, beginning midnight April 20.
- The protest was triggered by the killing of two Naga civilians at T M Kasom
- The incident occurred along National Highway 202 on April 18
- The victims were identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao and Yaruingam Vashum
Clash on First Day
On the first day of the bandh:
- Tension erupted between residents of T Khullen and villagers from Changoubung
- Incidents of stone-pelting were reported
- A vehicle belonging to the Senapati District Students’ Association was allegedly vandalised
Security forces were deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.
Impact of Shutdown
The shutdown affected normal life across Naga-dominated regions:
- Educational institutions, shops, and banks remained closed
- Essential services such as medical care, water supply, fire services, media, and religious activities were exempted
Additional Announcements
Naga organisations further:
- Called for a candlelight vigil on April 23 at 6:30 PM across district headquarters and Imphal
- Announced temporary suspension of social and economic ties with the Kuki community during the shutdown
Concerns and Allegations
The organisations raised serious concerns, stating that:
- The incident occurred close to security force deployment areas
- There was an alleged failure to prevent the attack
- The state government bears moral responsibility, noting the timing of the incident shortly after official visits to Ukhrul
Investigation Handed to NIA
Amid rising tensions, authorities have handed over the case to the National Investigation Agency for a detailed probe.
