Manipur CM Lauds PM Modi for Showcasing Chak Hao on International Platform

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has praised Narendra Modi for promoting Manipur’s famous GI-tagged Chak Hao black rice on the global stage by presenting it to the Queen Mother of the United Arab Emirates.

In a social media statement issued on May 22, the Chief Minister described the gesture as a proud moment for the people of Manipur and said it brought international recognition to one of the state’s most valued indigenous agricultural products.

According to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Prime Minister Modi’s decision to present Chak Hao to the UAE royal family highlighted the cultural identity and rich agricultural traditions of Manipur while honouring the dedication and hard work of local farmers who have preserved the crop for generations.

The Chief Minister stated that Chak Hao is not only a traditional delicacy but also a symbol of Manipur’s heritage, resilience, and agricultural excellence. He noted that the international spotlight on the black rice reflects the increasing global appreciation for indigenous products from Northeast India.

Officials said the recognition could help create wider awareness about Manipur’s GI-tagged agricultural products and open new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs in national and international markets.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh further encouraged citizens to support local farmers and promote indigenous products from the state to strengthen Manipur’s rural economy and traditional farming sector.

Chak Hao, popularly known as black rice, is widely celebrated for its nutritional value, aroma, and cultural significance in Manipuri cuisine and traditional ceremonies. The product received Geographical Indication (GI) status for its uniqueness and regional identity.

The Chief Minister added that such global recognition would inspire farmers and help boost the visibility of Manipur’s agricultural heritage across the world.
