Manipur Police Launches Barcode-Based E-Malkhana System for Digital Evidence Tracking

Manipur Police has launched a barcode-based E-Malkhana system at Irilbung Police Station in a significant step towards modernising evidence management and improving accountability in criminal investigations.

The digital system has been implemented at Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district and is designed to streamline the storage, tracking, retrieval, and management of case properties and exhibits.

Under the new system, every seized item and exhibit is assigned a unique barcode linked directly to its corresponding case record. The barcode stores detailed information, including the FIR number, applicable legal provisions, investigating officer’s details, property description, photographs, case status, and disposal records.

Police officials said the digital integration will enable faster identification and retrieval of evidence during investigations, judicial proceedings, and court hearings while ensuring proper preservation and documentation of exhibits.

The E-Malkhana system is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in handling case properties by reducing manual record-keeping and minimising the chances of errors or misplacement of evidence.

According to officials, the initiative forms part of the broader police modernisation programme aimed at strengthening station-level administration through technology-driven solutions and scientific evidence management practices.

The introduction of barcode-based tracking is also expected to improve coordination between investigating officers, police stations, and judicial authorities by providing quick access to accurate case-related information.

Police authorities stated that the project reflects ongoing efforts to adopt modern digital tools and improve the overall quality of criminal investigations and evidence handling across the state.
