Centre Deploys Two CRPF CoBRA Battalions to Manipur for Security Operations
The Central Government has approved the deployment of two battalions of the elite CoBRA force of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Manipur for operational duties as part of efforts to strengthen security and maintain stability in the state.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has cleared a proposal submitted by the CRPF to deploy two battalions of its specialised Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit in Manipur.
The battalions selected for deployment are the 207 CoBRA Battalion, currently based in West Bengal, and the 210 CoBRA Battalion stationed in Assam.
CoBRA is the specialised jungle warfare and counter-insurgency wing of the CRPF, trained to operate in difficult terrain and conduct high-risk operations against armed groups. The force has extensive experience in anti-insurgency and anti-extremist operations across various parts of the country.
The deployment comes as both the state administration and the Central Government continue efforts to restore lasting peace and normalcy in Manipur following the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.
Officials stated that the additional deployment is expected to enhance operational capabilities, strengthen area domination exercises, improve security coordination, and support ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in sensitive regions.
Security agencies have been carrying out intensified operations across the state to curb illegal activities, recover looted weapons, and ensure the safety of civilians amid the complex security situation.
The induction of the two CoBRA battalions is seen as part of a broader strategy to reinforce security infrastructure and support peace-building efforts in Manipur.
